Traditional Folk Music from Wales is now an option as part of the WJEC Music GCSE. Trac Cymru partnered with Arts In Education body NAWR to produce a resource pack for music teachers and tutors, which is available in English and Welsh versions as downloadable PDFs or through the Welsh Government’s education resources site, Hwb.
Educator and composer Sioned Webb was commissioned by Trac to write the pack, which is illustrated throughout with video links and exercises.
The pack helps teachers to:
• learn about these traditions and how to compare them with Western Classical and contemporary music genres
• work with students on composition, ensemble work, film and performance
• explore wider issues of identity and diversity within the new curriculum.
As an academic resource, the traditional music of Wales is a perfect springboard to explore the Welsh curriculum, the Welsh Baccalaureate and the GCSE syllabus in general. In a wider context this music is a perfect starting point to explore the culture, language and history of Wales and our place within an increasingly diverse world.
