The Tabwrdd: Unearthing the Welsh Drum
Information sourced from Marcus Music Manufacturers & Repairers
Drawings of the Tabwrdd, a Welsh traditional drum, were discovered by Cass Meurig from records of Rev. Meredith Morris. He was a talented instrument maker from the Cwm Gwaun Valley, who saw this drum being played at funerals in Wales around the turn of the centuary. The name tabwrdd is a translation of the word tabor. The tabor is an ancient snare drum that traditionally accompanies pipes or dancing, which has similar properties to the Tabwrdd.
This instrument has been revived by Marcus Music, concertina & drum manufacturers and repairers based in Newport on the Tredegar House National Trust site; made nowhere else in the world. Their tabwrdds range from 14 up to 20 inches wide, which can be heard on stage with Welsh artists including Fernhill, Bethan Nia, Mwsog and Twmpdaith.
